On February 7, Judy and Alan Miller, CEO and President, respectively, of The Gabe W. Miller Memorial Foundation, presented a $4,000 social service grant to Loyola University Chicago's School of Social Work of Loyola University Chicago (LUC).
This grant will serve as "seed money" to help in the growth of the Empowering Counseling Program, a plan of action to assist the residents of Chicago's Madden-Wells neighborhood. Angel Pringle, MSW candidate and Jeff Bulanda, PhD candidate, both of Loyola's School of Social Work, and both principals involved with the Empowering Counseling Program, gave a presentation on the history of Bronzeville (the neighborhood that includes Madden-Wells). They presented the Chicago Housing Authority's (CHA) plan for building or rehabbing 25,000 housing units; the needs of the Madden-Wells community (counseling, education, employment, anger management, youth development, criminal record expungement), After School Matters (including programs that employ teenagers and expose them to post-high school planning, tutoring, weekly community service projects and one-on-one counseling); the Doolittle School Counseling Program and Caring Partnerships, in-home services for families at risk for child neglect/abuse.
Among those attending the presentation of the grant were Jack Wall, PhD, Dean of the Loyola School of Social Work; Loyola Professor and Gabe Miller Foundation Advisory Board member, Marcia Spira; Loyola Professor Katherine Tyson; Joel Rubin, Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers-Illinois Chapter and Adjunct Professor at both Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC and Loyola and a Gabe Miller FoundationAdvisory Board member; and Zenobia Johnson-Black, representative from the CHA.For further information, please contact The Foundation.
