GABE W. MILLER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION AWARDS
THIRTY FIRST SCHOLARSHIP

Candyss Newman

Candyss Newman, Loyola University School of Social Work.

Growing up, her main focus was survival. As a child and young adult, she survived homelessness and abuse, fueling her passion for helping others in similar situations, and seeking to break the cycle of poverty and despair.

Candyss begins her second-year internship with LAF (formerly known as the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago) as part of the dual MSW/MJ (Children's Law and Policy) program. As an advocate for the client-centered principles of social work, she will help Chicago's most vulnerable population navigate complicated legal proceedings by improving the communication between attorneys, social service agencies, and clients. Her primary responsibility will involve educating clients regarding their rights so that parents can care for their children, victims can escape their abusers, families can avoid homelessness, and workers across Illinois are free of exploitation.

Her ultimate career goal is to promote the healthy development of at-risk children and adolescents. She plans to pursue work within organizations that focus on program development and public policy.
